The buzz about Facebooks Vanity URL’s (usernames) seems like complete old news if you have been glued to the endless conversations and Facebook vanity link sharing on Twitter.
While some social media enthusiasts are plastering there new Facebook Vanity URL’s as far as they can across the web, others are continuing to focus on simply promoting their own brands.
I was reminded about this by John Chow from a recent tweet, but I originally grabbed this great tip from James Shramko at the World Internet Summit.
It’s ridiculously simple, yet once it sinks in, it strikes a mild ‘aha’ moment.
Better to know this now before you experience something as inconvenient as the new famous Youtube slap.
So What’s the Anti-Vanity and Anit-Social-Slapping tip?
- Use your own domain names or redirect URL’s to promote your social media sites.
At this point you might be saying: “Duh!”, but think about that for just a minute.
How many times do we see social sites change their policies? Or, even worse, do a complete disappearing act and decide to call it a day like Pounce did?
Recently, about four or five top marketers that I know of had their Youtube accounts shut down with very little to no explanation.
Think about all those backlinks that point to YourSocialSite.com/YourUsername?
Whereas, if you had simply promoted your own domain with a redirect or link, e.g. http://thatMLMbeat.com/youtube, you still have the control over the links.
In the unfortunate event of you losing your account or the site shutting down, you still have the power to redirect the traffic to a video site or social profile of your choice.
Simple, sweet, yet very powerful.
I’m sure that using a redirect URL like I did above can have some SEO benefits leak through to your main domain as well, but not to sure on that one.
